BetterTTV (BTTV)
The oldest of the three. BTTV adds global emotes and channel emotes that streamers manage on the BTTV site, plus settings for Twitch chat in the browser. Many emotes now considered “Twitch classics” come from BTTV.
FrankerFaceZ (FFZ)
FFZ also offers global and channel emotes, its own badges and a very large number of settings for chat in the browser. The FFZ:AP add-on brings further emotes.
7TV
The newest provider and by now the largest in many communities. Besides emotes, 7TV brings paints (coloured names), its own badges and emote changes that reach chat live without a reload. Animated emotes are the norm on 7TV.
Which one do you need?
The channel decides, not you. A streamer sets up emotes with one or more providers; if you do not load one of them, you miss those emotes. Since many channels mix them, the easiest option is to load all three.
In the browser that means three extensions. Desktop clients like Chatterino and mobile clients like JilChat load all three on their own.
