How to use Twitch chat without watching the stream

In the browser, open chat on its own at twitch.tv/popout/CHANNELNAME/chat. On a phone the Twitch app cannot do this; you need a dedicated chat app.

In the browser

  1. Go to twitch.tv/popout/CHANNELNAME/chat.
  2. Chat opens without the video and without the rest of the page. You can read and write as usual.

On PC with a chat client

Clients like Chatterino show nothing but chat. That saves performance and bandwidth, for example when the stream is playing on another device.

On your phone

In the official Twitch app, chat is always attached to the video. A chat app like JilChat shows just chat, as a second screen next to your TV or monitor. If you do want the video, switch on the built-in player.

Frequently asked questions

Do I count as a viewer if I am only in chat?

Twitch’s viewer count counts people playing the stream. If you only have chat open, you show up in the chatter list but generally not in the viewer count.
